Art Sunday: Fidgety Fingered Genius

Keith Richards. Carlos Santana. Lars Ulrich. Nikki Sixx. Jimmy Page. Eric Clapton. Angus Young. Ace Frehley. Randy Rhoads. Richie Sambora. Jerry Garcia. Les Paul.

What do all of these gentlemen have in common? First, they are all musicians. Second, they are all guitarists...Legendary Guitarists. Third, they all have Mars and Uranus in aspect in their natal charts.

At first consideration, musical talent is not really what pops to mind when I think of Mars/Uranus. However, many of the people above also have Mars/Uranus with Neptune in the mix in some way. That fact gives way to some inkling of musical ability.

Les Paul had Mars in Taurus square Uranus in Aquarius. Mars in Taurus is steady and can be a rather refined and smooth placement as far as motor skills go. Movements are deliberate and instituted in a way that conserves as much energy as possible. Aquarius is where Uranus SHOULD be as it the traditional ruler of the sign. In aspect to that Mars in Taurus and the smoothness of that placement becomes...twitchy.

Les Paul

Uranus is the cattle prod to Les Paul's Mars in Taurus. He could either move or stay in place absorbing the constant shocks.

Mars/Uranus can be equivalent to fidgety, electric-like impulses. I have the conjunction in Libra. I twiddle my thumbs or have something at the ready to keep my hands busy at all times. I heard a lot of “Sit still!” and “Stop bouncing that pencil on the table!” growing up. Thing is...you can't sit still. If you sit still it feels like you may start convulsing. You HAVE to move.

If you do NOT discharge the energy flow from Mars/Uranus, you can become clumsy. Accident prone. Develop nervous disorders such as depression and/or anxiety. As a matter of fact anxiety is common with Mars/Uranus. Electrical disorders such as heart arrhythmias and epilepsy are also pretty common place.

But, if you can ground this nearly mechanical electrical current and direct it where you want it to go, it can equate to ingenuously refined movement...such as we see embodied in these gentlemen who took their fidgets and put them to good use.

Inventiveness (and a drive for individuality and independence) is also a factor whenever you are speaking of the powers of Uranus. From wikipedia: “Les Paul (born Lester William Polsfuss on June 9, 1915) is an American jazz guitarist and inventor. He is a pioneer in the development of the solid-body electric guitar which "made the sound of rock and roll possible." His many recording innovations include overdubbing, delay effects such as "sound on sound" and tape delay, phasing effects and multitrack recording. In 2003, he was named the 46th best guitarist of all time by Rolling Stone although many seasoned rock artists feel he should have been rated much higher because of his longevity and guitar achievements and innovations.”

Not only was Les' Uranus well placed in Aquarius, it was also conjunct his North Node and in the 11th house. It wasn't enough to fidget. He needed to invent a new sound. He did and changed the sound of music forever. Now, a guitar from Les Paul is a star in the collection of any guitar aficionado.

Every name on my introductory list up there came from Rolling Stone's list of 150 best guitarists of all time. On June 29th, Mars will line up in opposition to Uranus bringing this jittery and fidgety energy to the surface. Use it!

You don't have to learn to play guitar. However, it would be a cool time to give it a shot if that's something you would like to do. You will have to MOVE though. Dance. Run. Do something to discharge this energy and combat the nervousness and anxiety that come along if you try to sit still with it.

If you have this aspect in your natal chart, hopefully you have found an outlet. If you have a child with this aspect, let them move! Encourage them to move! See if playing an instrument interests them—particularly if you have a child that was born during the very long Mars/Uranus conjunction in Pisces in 2008. PLEASE, if you are parent of these children get them a musical instrument. We NEED an influx of musical genius, if you ask me.

I've already mentioned that most of the above musicians have Neptune mixed into their Mars/Uranus aspects. But, there are some who portray a natural inclination toward nimble fingers. These Mars/Uranus aspects include Mercury, in some way.

Jimmy Page has Mars conjunct Uranus in Gemini opposing Venus in Sagittarius. From wikipedia: “Page is credited as a forefather of heavy metal by not only turning up the accepted volume of the electric guitar but also with his anthemic riffs and meticulous studio production. Page is widely considered to be the first producer to truly create the "heavy" sound of rock music with the combination of new drum recording methods and revolutionary room.

In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine ranked him #9 in their ranking of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Page also has the distinction of having been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice as a member of both The Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin.”

Carlos Santana has the same conjunction in Gemini in his first house sextile Saturn and Pluto in Leo and trine Neptune in Libra. From wikipedia: “He became famous in the late 1960s and early 1970s with his band, the Santana Blues Band, going mostly under the title "Santana," which created a highly successful blend of salsa, rock, blues, and jazz fusion. Their sound featured his often high-pitched and distorted guitar lines set against Latin American instrumentation such as timbales and congas. Santana continued to work in these forms over the following decades, and experienced a sudden resurgence of popularity and critical acclaim in the late 1990s.

Over his career he has sold an estimated 85 million albums worldwide”

Keith Richards has THE SAME Mars/Uranus conjunction in Gemini in his 7th house. It is in sextile to Pluto/MC in Leo and trine to Neptune in Libra. Now. Musical ability is not the ONLY outlet for this kind of energy. However, it is proving to be a mighty effective and rewarding one! From wikipedia (as if you need me to tell you who Keith Richards is) “Keith Richards (born 18 December 1943) is an English guitarist, songwriter, singer and a founding member of the British musical group The Rolling Stones in 1962. With songwriting partner and Stones lead vocalist Mick Jagger, he has written, recorded and published hundreds of songs including "Satisfaction", "Jumpin' Jack Flash", "Miss You" and "Start Me Up". Though he has had a solo career and appears as a guest artist on the recordings of other artists, his association with the Stones has defined his musical career. As a guitarist Richards is mostly known for his innovative rhythm playing. In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Richards #10 in its list of "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time".
