Art Sunday: EE Cummings and Venus square Jupiter

I've decided to revive and renew a blog experiment I started in 2005 called Art Sunday. Each Sunday, I will choose an artist who has an aspect in their chart that is relevant to current transits. Today, I've chosen EE Cummings for his Jupiter in Cancer square to Venus in Libra.

Mr. Cummings was excellent at capturing emotion. His Jupiter in Cancer would expand his ability to do so. And, his Neptune in Gemini would allow him to soften and mystify through his chosen medium (be that painting or poetry).

The square from his Jupiter in Cancer to Venus in Libra could have posed problems. Laziness comes to mind. But, his own out going Moon in Aries and the pull of his North Node would not have allowed him to do that forever. Mars Rx in Aries sings the opposite tune of our current Mars Rx in Libra.

However it would appear that Mr. Cummings overcame what he may have lacked in dexterity with the ability to create flow. Flow mixed with a panache for aesthetics makes many of Cummings paintings a experience of colorful and watery indulgence. He maintains the push of Venus/Jupiter which is TOO MUCH in just right amount of constraint which echoes the diligence of his Sun/Saturn.

As you can see, in this first representation from a collection called "Seaside/Lakeside" Cummings spares no color. However it is mixed within a balance that pleases and makes sense instead of overwhelms. Cummings captured the ever changing waterscapes with ease.

The above is also from Cumming's "Seaside/Lakeside" collection. He is still prolific with shading but reserves his color usage to spotlight the red of the subjects hair and to draw attention to the curves of her body through highlights and shadows.
Jupiter in Cancer would appreciate the flowing curves of a beautiful woman while working hard to capture the emotion of the shot. Her smile seems posed. As if she is aware of being completely exposed but wants to mask her discomfort in that to add to the beauty of a work of art. Cummings seems to capture that perfectly. Still yet, though water is not an element featured in this painting, flow is DEFINITELY present.

This painting from the same collection features both water and human shapes through the use of prolific and harsher color in an effort to capture the passion of the scene. Is the couple becoming enraptured by the tumultuous sea that surrounds them? Or is this metaphoric for overwhelming emotional tides. Either way, you can see, even though flow is present, this is not an embracing sort of emotion. It is turbulent and worked perfectly into canvas and influenced by the abundance that is Jupiter square venus.
